A Grille Chompa is an enemy found in Clanker's Cavern, Mad Monster Mansion (inside Loggo), Rusty Bucket Bay and in several areas around Gruntilda's Lair such as the entrance to Clanker's Cavern and the entrance to Rusty Bucket Bay in Banjo-Kazooie. This bizarre Lungfish hides within broken grates on walls in damp and dark areas. If Banjo and Kazooie get too close, the Grille Chompa growls and lunges from its hole, biting at the air three times before retreating back. It continues to do so until Banjo and Kazooie move away from it or until it is defeated.
Although Grille Chompas look tough, they have extremely low vitality and can be easily defeated with a well-timed Rat-a-tat Rap whenever their bodies are exposed, and even before they pop out. They can prove themselves to be very irritating as they are mostly found on high up walks, pushing Banjo and Kazooie off the edge, often resulting in a long fall and even more damage.
A similar version of the Grille Chompa, the Portrait Chompa, also appears in Mad Monster Mansion. They are also similar to the Big Cluckers in Click Clock Wood.
These enemies reappear in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge found in Bad Magic Bayou and Spiller's Harbor. They remain the same as they did in Banjo-Kazooie and are mainly found in areas near Mecha-Grunty or at places where Mecha-Grunty is.
