Rare Replay: 30 Hit Games · One Epic Collection (usually referred to as simply Rare Replay) is an anniversary compilation game released for the Xbox One in 2015. The game, as its title implies, features ports of 30 of Rare's previous games. Most notably, the package includes the Xbox 360 versions of Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie as well as Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. At the time of its release, this was the only way to play these Banjo games on the Xbox One console, as backwards compatibility with the Xbox 360 had not yet been released. The package also includes behind-the-scenes featurettes for the development of these games.

On June 5th, 2019, Rare Replay was added to Xbox Game Pass and all the included games were updated to support native 4K resolution. In 2020, the Xbox Series X/S released and included backwards compatibility for Rare Replay at launch.

Gameplay[]

Rare Replay includes 3 main modes: Game Gallery, Snapshots and Rare Revealed. The menus feature a design reminiscent of classic theatres, with gold frames, 2D paper-like illustrations and red walls as backgrounds.

Game Gallery[]

In this mode, players can access the full games featured in the collection. 30 games are included, with the most relevant being Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. Playing any of the games previously released on the Xbox 360 installs them on the user's Xbox as standalone titles that can either be accessed from within Rare Replay or on the user's Xbox home screen. The Banjo-Kazooie games in the collection are unchanged from their Xbox 360 versions. If the user owns these games separately from Rare Replay, both versions will use the same save data.

In addition to the games themselves, earning gamerscore in the games by completing achievements will unlock stamps which grant the player access to bonus content in the 'Rare Revealed' section.

Snapshots[]

The snapshots mode contains several short challenges the player can complete within several of the older titles in the compilation. A playlist mode is also included, grouping several snapshots into back-to-back challenges with limited lives. Completing these snapshots unlocks stamps to be used in the 'Rare Revealed' section.

Rare Revealed[]

The Rare Revealed section of the game includes extra content related to the games included in the compilation, to celebrate Rare's 30th anniversary. This section includes mini-documentaries, concept art and footage, music and more, divided into 5 sections.

Featurettes[]

This section includes two featurettes focusing on Rare as a whole. The first, "What Makes a Rare Game?" features veteran Rare staff discussing "the studio's legacy and what gives its games a 'Rare' quality". The second, "The Faces Behind the Voices", focuses on interviews with voice actors from Rare games.

The Making Of...[]

This section features several short documentaries detailing the development of specific games created by Rare. Most notably, "Dreaming of Banjo" features interviews with several developers who worked on Banjo-Kazooie chronicling the game's development.

Concept Showcases[]

This section features short videos containing concept art and designs from several Rare games. "B-K: Nuts & Bolts Showcase" features concept art from Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts.

Previously Unseen[]

This section features short documentaries detailing the development of several unreleased and unfinished Rare games.

Top-Secret Tunes[]

This section features previously unreleased music from Rare games in development, most notably from Project Dream (which would later become Banjo-Kazooie).

Game Reaction[]

The compilation received positive reception, with many reviewers praising the game for remastering many classic games in Rare's library and the wealth of bonus content included. It received the following reviews:

  • IGN: 9
  • Metacritic: 84

Music[]

The music used in the game's menus was composed by Robert Beanland, a composing veteran at Rare. The opening of the game features a sung musical number chronicling Rare's past and introducing the game. All games included in the collection feature reimaginings of songs from the games used for their landing pages.

Trivia[]

  • In the collection's menus, characters from Banjo-Kazooie are depicted in the Nuts & Bolts art style/design as this was the most recent Banjo-Kazooie game at the time.
